Regulations of the Credit Hours System for the Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management

Applied to the Faculty starting from the Academic Year:   2011 / 2012

Article ‘4’: Faculty Departments:

The Faculty is comprised of the following scientific departments:

-         Tourism Studies Department.

-         Hotel Management Department.

-         Tourism Guidance Department.

The University grants the following Scientific degrees at the request of the faculty:

-         Bachelor Degree in Tourism and Hotel Management (Tourist Studies).

-         Bachelor Degree in Tourism and Hotel Management (Hotel Management).

-         Bachelor Degree in Tourism and Hotel Management (Tourism Guidance).

 

Article ‘5’: Conditions of Enrollment :

To enroll the student for the study, he/she must fulfill the following:

·        The student must fulfill the enrollment conditions determined by the Supreme Council for Universities and the Private Universities Council.

·        The student must be medically fit according to what is specified by the university.

·        The Student must be dedicated to the study.

 Article ‘6’: The Following Categories are accepted by the faculty:

-         The Students who were awarded the General Secondary School qualification with its two branches or its equivalent.

-         The students who were awarded the Hotelier Secondary Diploma and the Technical Commercial Secondary education, five years system.

Article ‘7’:  The Students are distributed on the departments upon the basis acknowledged by  the Faculty Council and approved by the university taking into account the students' wishes and the subjects qualifying for the study in every department.

 Study System

Article ‘8’:

* The Curriculum is implemented using the Credit Hours System (Terms), where a credit hour represents a lecture lasting of 50 minutes or two practical hours (50 minutes for each) on a weekly basis over one study term.

* The Academic Year is divided into two study terms i.e. First Term and Second Term. The term lasts for 14 weeks upon the approval of the Faculty Council and University Council. A summer term for six weeks may exist; the teaching hours for each subject per week are doubled to be equal to the teaching hours in the first and second terms, provided that this should be consistent with the practical training.

* Lectures and practical classes must be regularly attended.

* The Student is graduated and awarded the degree after passing 144 credit hours distributed over four study levels.

Article ‘9’:  Registration Procedures:  

The registration procedures are performed according to the rules approved by the Faculty and University Councils.

 Article ‘10’:  The Grades Monitoring:

The Grades are allocated to the students according to following table:

·        "Failed": the student is given  Grade "F" when he/she obtains total marks less than the minimum mark of the subject, or when he / she obtains a mark less than 30% in the written exam.

·        "F" Grade remains in his /her record and enters in the student’s term and accumulative average calculation.

·        The Student is required  to re-register and study.

·        In case of the student's re-registration and success in the subject the Grade obtained at maximum of 65% of the maximum mark for the subject "C-" is recorded and the previous mark, i.e., "F", remains in the student record but not used in the term and accumulative average calculation..

·        Improvement: this symbol is given to the subject the student wants to improve.

·        The Subject marked for improving is re-registered if the pass mark is less than 65% "C"-.

·        Number of subjects to be improved must not exceed 10% of the total hours required for graduation.

·        The mark for the improved subject is recorded as it is, and the better mark for the student remains in the student record where the other mark is excluded when calculating the term or accumulative average.

·        Transferred: The student’s subject exempted from study according to an approved transference is given the sign "TR".

·        The grade and mark obtained by the student out of transference enter in calculating the term and cumulative grade average.

·        "Withdrawn": the symbol "W" is allocated when the student is withdrawn from the study of a subject upon an acceptable excuse.

·        The Student must submit a withdrawal request from the subject on the time determined by the faculty under the approval of an academic supervisor.

·        The Student’s excuse is accepted in case of approval of the faculty council and according to the conditions it sets.

·        The sign "W" remains in the student record with the associated mark and does not enter in calculating the term or cumulative average.

·        The Student has to change this mark by re-registering the subject before two academic terms pass.

W

·        The sign can be changed from "W" to "WF" if the mark is not modified on time.

·        The grade "WF" is handled as the grade "F".

·        The Student gets the better work mark of the new year or the previous one when re-registering the subject.

WF

·        In-Complete: the symbol "IC" is allocated to the subject that its requirements have not been completed yet.

·        The marks awarded to the student are not included in calculating the term or cumulative grade average.

·        The Student must complete the subject requirements before the end of the next study term.

·        If the student does not complete the requirements on time, then he/she is considered as "Failed" who obtains grade  "F".

·        If subject is extended, the student should take  exam on the parts which he failed; the subject is considered as in-complete and allocated Symbol "IC" until the student succeeds in the parts in which he failed  at the end of the following academic term. 

·        The student - who is  not able to complete the  subject requirements for compulsory reasons accepted by the department council, and who fulfills  at least 75%  of the attendance requirements - gets a grade of In-complete "IC", and he/she has to take the exam  in the next academic term. Otherwise the student obtains the grade "F".

·        Absent: If the student is absent  in  the final exam  of the subject with an excuse accepted by both the academic supervisor and the Faculty Council,  the subject is given the symbol ‘AB’.

·        The Symbol "AB" is handled as the Symbol "IC".

·        Deprived: If the student does not fulfill the rate of attendance, not less than 75%,  the subject is allocated the symbol ‘DN’ and the student is deprived from entering  the exam of  the subject, given the mark (zero) and grade "F". This grade enters in the term and accumulative average calculations.

DN

·        Disciplinary Deprivation: in case of cancellation of the subject as a penalty to the student, then the subject is given the Symbol "DS" and the mark (zero) which enters in the term and accumulative average calculation.

·        (DS) is handled as (F).

Article ‘11’:  Exams and Evaluation  System:

·        40% of the mark is given to the requirements of the study works, scientific activities, and regular attendance .

·        60% of the mark is given to the Written Exam.

·        As for the Applied Subjects, 60% of the mark is given to the applied exams.

·        For the common subjects between the applied and theoretical, 40% of the mark is given to the written exam, and 20% to the applied exam .

·        The Project:

-         The Project is considered an extended subject.

-         50% of the Project mark is given to the scientific activity, the study works, and regular attendance of lectures throughout the academic year. 50% is given to the discussion of the Project after the second academic term’s exams on a date specified by the Faculty Council.

-         If a student fails in the Project, the same subject is re-registered in the next academic year.

 

  Article ‘12’ Grading System

The Student is allocated the grade consisting with the marks he/she obtained in the syllabus  as follows:

The Honorary Grade:

The Student is granted on honorary grade when graduated if he/she  gains at least a general grade "Very Good" provided that his/her Grading Percentage of Average (GPA)  in any academic term is not less than "2.67" during his/her period of study.  A "Honorary Grade" is granted to a student who did not fail in any exam during his/her study in the faculty.

 

Article ‘13’:  Promoting  to Higher Levels:

·        A Student is promoted to the Second Level if he/ she successfully passes, (30) credit  hours.

·        A Student is promoted to the Third Level if he/she successfully passes, (60) credit hours.

·        A Student is promoted to the Fourth Level if he/she passes, (90) credit hours.

 

Article ‘14’:  The Student’s Academic Burden is 36 Credit Hours per Year’:

·        The Student is allowed to register with the minimum of 24 approved hours and a maximum of 36 credit hours in one  academic year . The  term’s academic burden must not exceed 18 credit  hours and not less than 12 credit  hours per  week.

·        The Student is allowed to enroll in the summer academic season with a maximum 9 credit hours per week; these hours increase due to sick status or for graduation upon the approval of the Department and Faculty Councils.

·        The Student’s Academic Burden is reduced to 12 hours in the academic term in case the student’s GPA is less than 1.5. A first written warning is issued to the student .

·         The Student’s Academic Burden is reduced to 9 academic hours in the academic term in case the student’s GPA is less than 1. A second written warning is issued to the student who has to improve his/her average to exceed ‘1’ before the end of two successive academic terms. Otherwise, the student will be discarded from the faculty.

 

Article ‘15’: Study Halt:

·        If the student halts his/her study without any excuse for two successive academic terms, enrollment is stopped and the internal regulations of the university are applied at him/her before re-enrollment.

·        The Student has the right to halt his/her enrollment in the faculty for emergency reasons approved by the faculty council for two academic terms during the whole period of study in the faculty. The student maintains all hours and grades he/she previously obtained.

·        With the approval of the faculty and university councils, it is allowed to stop the enrollment for a longer period of time provided this does not violate the unified rules applied in the university.

 

Training: The Student is committed to complete 60 credit hours after which he/she performs practical training during the summer holiday for 8weeks ,including  at least 4 weeks in the field of specialty.  The training is a condition for graduation; the student is only graduated after performing the training.

 

The Academic Guidance:

The faculty allocates an academic supervisor from the faculty staff in the same specialty the student wishes for.  This academic supervisor provides advice and guidance during the student’s period of study.

Every student is required to get the International Certificate for Controlling the Computer "ICDL" before being awarded the Bachelor degree in the various specialties in the faculty.

 

The Interim Stage:

·        The new regulation of credit hours system - "terms" - is applied at beginning of the following academic year for obtaining the approval of the Supreme Council for Universities and the issue of a ministerial decree concerning it.
