Prof. Mousse Ibrahim, the Dean of Faculty in Information Systems and Computer Science has conducted a seminar about “The Role of Higher Education in Sustainable Development” on Thursday 18th of April. The presentation was divided into the following topics: 1- What is meant by a sustainable development? 2- The need for rational consumption of our planet resources and the measure of real consumption in the form of biological footprint 3- The UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development 2005 – 2014 in which a high light of the following ideas was presented: a) Education for sustainable development is everyone’s business. b) Change towards a better quality of life starts with education. c) Our biggest challenge in this new century is to take an idea that seems abstract sustainable development – and turn it into a reality for all the world’people, as stated By Kofi Annan, The Former Secretary General of the United Nations 4- At last the Declaration of Higher Education Institutions for Sustainable Development which was issued on the occasion of the United Nations conference on sustainable development, held in Rio de Janeivo from 20-22 June 2012 was presented and explained the five main actions that agreed upon. It can be summarized as: A. Teach sustainable development concepts B. Encourage research on sustainable development issues C. Green our campuses. D. Support sustainability efforts in the communities in which we reside E. Engage with and share results through international framework. The student raised a lot of questions since the seminar subject was unfamiliar with their information background. It was a good occasion to answer their concerns about, sustainable development.
