An Integrative Education Including Development & Designing of Phytopharmaceutical Products
Fifth Level - December 2017
17 Medicinal Plants → 24 Plant products → 35 Phytopharmaceuticals → Represented in 24 Posters
· Aims:
Integration study between practical courses of production and manufacturing of medicinal plants (PHCG 441) (Department of Pharmacognosy) and drug design and pharmaceutical formulation (PHCT 417) (Department of Pharmaceutics & Industrial Pharmacy) by guiding students to produce herbal preparations and further development of these preparations into Phytopharmaceutical products.
· Production and Manufacture of Medicinal Plants (PHCG 441):
Development of the practical course by enabling students to prepare different herbal preparations from dried medicinal plants viz. herbal extracts, volatile oils, fixed oils and gels; at the specified course labs; to acquire skills of preparing herbal raw material for pharmaceutical industries.
· Drug Design and Pharmaceutical Formulation (PHCT 417):
Integration with Production and Manufacture of Medicinal Plants course by development & designing of a pharmaceutical herbal product (Phytopharmaceuticals); at the specified course labs; using the herbal products previously produced by students at the specified course labs.
· Framework:
· Production and Manufacture of Medicinal Plants (PHCG 441):
1. 17 Different Medicinal Plants were chosen.
2. 24 Medicinal Plant Products (extracts, volatile oils, fixed oils and gels) were Prepared.
3. The students are classified into groups: each of 40 students.
4. Each group has achieved the following:
a. A full monograph for each medicinal plant.
b. A full flow chart for processing of each medicinal plant to prepare the decided plant products.
c. Preparation of at least one Volatile oil and one Extract (or Fixed oil or Gel) from the medicinal plants.
d. Deciding the best formula for designing a Phytopharmaceutical product for each prepared medicinal plant product (Integration with Drug Design and Pharmaceutical Formulation).
· Drug Design and Pharmaceutical Formulation (PHCT 417):
1. The students are classified into groups: as distributed in Production and Manufacture of Medicinal Plants (Integration with Production and Manufacture of Medicinal Plants).
2. Each group has achieved the following:
a. Preparation of at least one Phytopharmaceutical product (Total; 35) using one of the prepared herbal products (Integration with Production and Manufacture of Medicinal Plants).
b. Suggesting dosage form, formula & method of preparation.
c. Naming, Packaging & Marketing of the new product.
