English Abstract:
“Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) and IGF- binding proteins (IGFBPs) have been reported to play an important role in tumor proliferation. This study aimed to investigate the validity of measuring IGFs and specific IGFBPs in the serum of Egyptian children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) as additional markers in diagnosis and follow up of the disease. IGF-I, IGF-II, IGFBP-2 and IGFBP-3 were determined in the sera of 33 ALL patients from the National Cancer Institute at time of diagnosis and after the intensification phase of chemotherapy (IPC) as well as in 15 healthy children, served, as a control group using ELISA technique. These patients were diagnosed by complete blood count and bone marrow aspiration and they also showed high serum lactate dehydrogenase activity at time of diagnosis that decreased after IPC. At time of diagnosis, serum IGF-I, IGF-II and IGFBP-3 were significantly decreased in ALL patients as compared with the control group. After IPC, serum levels of IGF-I and IGF-II increased and returned to their normal levels, while serum IGFBP-3 was significantly increased but its level was still lower than the normal level. On the other hand, serum IGFBP-2 was significantly increased in ALL patients at diagnosis and returned to the normal level after IPC. In conclusion, IGF system could be useful to support diagnosis and follow-up of children with ALL.”

Dr. Silvia Azmi is graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy, October 6 University (June / 2000) and is considered as the first to earn a doctoral degree in Faculty of Pharmacy October 6 University.
