Political Science

Hello,

My name is Ghzlan Mahmoud AbdeAziz, my research interest include; Asian studies, China, and regional organizations. My main specialized is international relations and international law.

International relations and International law is one of the main modules that might meet me in if you decided to join the O6U Political Science department.

The Department of Political Science provides majors with a strong foundation to expand awareness and understanding of political life, stimulates scholarship and continuing interest in government, government service, and civics—and provides a framework for enriching the exposure of majors and the wider university community to the study of government, politics, and issues of public concern. You also may explore themes of war and peace and the effects of globalization, the role of international law and organizations.

The Department's programs are specially designed to develop analytical skills, combining organized knowledge with practical experience that introduces and prepares students for career opportunities in the public as well as non-governmental sectors. Many occupations today require a college-educated individual who can write and speak well, solve problems, learn new information quickly, and work well with others on a team. Political Science students prepare for professional training in public policy, public administration, law, graduate education in the policy sciences, as well as employment in government and non-government public sector organizations, including non-profit organizations or businesses relating to international affairs.

The Department offers a Bachelor of Political Science and a Major in Political Science.

First level

Political sciences I

Political sciences (I) focuses on giving a student a general idea about the concept of political science, methodologies of research and political analysis and the state concerning pillars thereof and different theories on the origin of the idea of the state. This science, also, deals with the sovereign phenomena, the role of law in a state, limits of political control and functions of a state. Moreover, this curriculum presents a simple idea on the political thought development and most political ideologies and doctrines.

Political Sciences II

The political sciences curriculum 11 aims at simple presentation of most political regimes and types of countries as well as studying the elite, the public opinion and lobbies. This curriculum, also, gives a general and simple study on international relations including the study of national elements, the international system and foreign policy development and an introduction to most problems and issues of the contemporary world and international organizations. 

Second Level

Political Systems

 Description of that curriculum is described by the scientific department in light of contemporary variables.

International relations

The curriculum focuses on studying international political relations development since the Congress of Vienna dated 1815 till the end of the contemporary stage with a view to getting acquainting with basic features of the development of such relations in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The curriculum deals with basic turning points in the development of international relations and basic characteristics of each stage in order to acquaint students with such characteristics from one hand as well as linking such study to some theories of international political relations from the other hand. 

Third level

Readings in political sciences in a foreign language

A group of political sciences topics are taught in the English language to train students in reading and writing complementary topics in the English language.

Public administration

This curriculum’s objective is to teach students different fields of public administration and to what extent there is a relationship between politics and administration. It includes definition of the public administration, the relationship between public-policy and administration and decision making, basic function of the public-administration, the study of the bureaucratic model, civil service, administrative leadership, governmental body organizations, development management, administrative reform and public administration organization in the Arab Republic of Egypt.

Development of Political Thought

The objective of this curriculum is to provide students with basic knowledge about the political thought development in the old and Middle Ages not via tracing the history of the political ideas but through analyzing the political ideas development from the local to the international level.

It includes in introduction to define concepts of political ideas beginning in China, India and old Egypt, then the Greek polijical thought as expressed by Plato and Aristotle after that the Coptic and Islamic thought in the middle ages, with clarifying interaction between civilizations and how ideas were affected and had effects through civilizations.

 Also, the curriculum deals with the political thought development in the Renaissance Age witnessed by the West starting from Machiavelli to Imam Muhammad 'Abduh, dimensions of the three .schools of thought: Liberal, Western and Socialism integrate in addition to renewal in the Islamic political .thought.

This curriculum will deal with each thinker in light of their environment and circumstances of their ages, with identification of each one’s most contributions whose effects exceeding limits of their ages.

Computer application in Political sciences

This course aims at training students in some basic skills of computer that they may need at the practical exercise of the political science. It focuses on the applied side of computer programming as well as making use of it to facilitate a politician job. It, also, aims at training students in the usage of a number of necessary statistical packages used in political studies.

Research Methodologies in Political Science

This course aims at training students in preparing researches in the field of political sciences through teaching them most important steps of the research process such as: the research problem, scientific hypothesis, concepts and variables, data collection methods, data analysis tools and reaching results. Part of the curriculum is devoted to practical training in preparing researches.

International relations

This curriculum deals with defining international relations and methodologies thereof and effective power of these relations, then, it focuses on some main topics in international relations such as international coordination, international integration and struggle. At the end, students learn theorization of international relations and problems they face, as well as most put-fourth theories in that regard.

International law & organization

This curriculum deals with the definition of the public and private international law and characteristics and sources thereof together with defining the international legal System and its relationship with national legal systems. The curriculum focuses on studying the idea of the state within the framework of the international legal system and consequential issues such international borders, recognition of states and governments, international liability and international inheritance. 

Fourth level

Contemporary international issues and problems 

This curriculum deals with defining the international problem and consideration methods, general characteristics of the international problems in the contemporary international system. It focuses on analyzing most contemporary international problems from origins, movement and results thereof. By the beginning of each academic year, the department determines such issues and problems the curriculum will deal with.

Foreign policy

This curriculum aims at enabling students to understand and apply put forth methodological concepts and tools in order to understand the foreign policy.$0$0-         It comprises definition of the foreign to policy, difference between foreign policy and other concepts, frameworks related to national characteristics, political regime, different foreign variables, psychological environment of political leaders and practical study on foreign policy making process including taking such decisions related to the foreign policy.

Arab political thought & political movements

This course deals with the political thought in the Arab region since the establishment of the Arab League in 1954 till now. It aims at shading light on most orientations of the Arab modern political thought since the Arab Revolt took place in 1916 as well as highlighting most basic thinking thoughts, namely, Arab nationalism, liberalism, and socialism and Islamic Arab trend with studying most thinkers as examples of each trend. For example, as for the Arab Nationalism: Sati' al-HusrT, Michel Aflak, Rifa'a al-Tahtawi and Lutfi al-Sayyed

Political theory

This curriculum includes defining the political theory, different orientations in teaching the political theory, determining research methodologies in the political theory especially speech analysis and critical analysis of concepts and bases of argument of political theorization. Then the curriculum includes deep study of some analytical political theoretical cases especially about the concept of power and state and most important contributions of the empirical political theory through western and Arab books on these issues. Moreover, this curriculum discusses the issue of value in the political theory and to what extent values can be studied scientifically before the deep discussion of some political values especially freedom, equality, justice and regime through Arab and western works on such concepts. The curriculum, also, discusses some effective schools of the normative political theory especially the social and liberal schools as well as citizenship and political commitment.

Diplomatic and consular systems

This curriculum includes studying the diplomatic systems through the history and characteristics of diplomacy and it relationship with other sciences. The history of diplomacy includes diplomacy in the old ages (Pharaonic - creek - Romanian), the middle ages (Byzantium — Arab - Al-Andalus), the modern ages, diplomacy of conferences, intematibhal organizations and diplomatic job (the legal base- appointment of missions chairmen - appointment of missions members - mixed diplomacy - powers of diplomacy - beginning and end of the diplomatic mission). Also, (fits curriculum includes studying consular systems through subjects on the studying of the consular systems types of consulates, formation of diplomatic missions, powers thereof, immunities of consular missions, the difference between consuls and diplomatic representatives and beginning and end of the consular mission.

Graduation Project – Political Science 

This course aims at the practical application of basic knowledge acquired by students during study of different courses of political sciences. A student chooses, under the supervision of a teaching staff member, a certain topic to be his graduation project during which they identify the research problem and the proposed treatment method within a time schedule and methodology determined through mutual agreement with such teaching staff member supervising the project. A student’s final report is to be presented before other class mates and present teaching staff members.

Egyptian Political Systems

This curriculum aims at discussing the development of the Egyptian political regime since the rein of King Mohamed Ali till the July 23rd Revolution of 1952 then it deals in detail with the period from the July 23rd Revolution of 1952 till the current time with concentration on features of that regime since the appearance of the Multi-party System and such roles played by political parties and groups in addition to legislative, executive and judicial authorities and relations between the three ones, as well as the position of the military institution in this regime.$0$0-         The study concludes with assessing the success of the Egyptian regime in facing most cases of political transformation such as partnership, distribution, identity and legitimacy.

African Issues

This curriculum’s objective is to make students get acquainted with Africa concerning main types of political regimes thereof. It includes the environmental and historical characteristics of the African Continent including the traditional political regimes and colonial types and their effect on the crystallization of the nationalism phenomena and post-independence policies. The curriculum focuses on studying most important dimensions of the political regimes in Africa with concentration on partisan systems, the military institution and democratization in Africa.

Contemporary Arab systems and Issues

This curriculum aims at making students get acquainted with most issues aroused by the study of the Arab political regimes such as the social environment of the Arab political regimes and social ranks in the Arab nation, the nature of the Arab regional system, divisions of ruling regime? in the Arab Nation and roles played by certain political powers including the traditional powers, military figures, businessmen, labor syndicates and basic ideologist movements in the Arab Nation (National, Islamic, Liberal and Marxism).$0$0-         Moreover, this curriculum reviews problems of political transformation in the Arab Nation especially the issue of moving from the dictatorial regime to more political participations. 

Public Opinion

This curriculum discusses such different theories related to public opinion, media and conditions thereof in the southern countries on the national, regional and international levels. It determines the concept of public opinion, stages of formation and determinants thereof. In addition to such methods affecting the public opinion and different measurement methods. Then, the curriculum steps to a second stage to define the concept of media, the theory of communication, different communication systems and philosophic bases upon which they are based. Also, it discusses the role of media in development and the international dimension of media bodies work and such special problems faced by the southern countries, as well as the call for a new international media system

Optional Subjects

Local administration

The concept of local administration and local government and local units , the problems dogging localities in Egypt and the origins and development of the foundations of the organization of local units , goals and strategies of the local units , the fundamental differences between the state and the government and the terms of reference for members of the government , specialized and its impacts on local , oversight role on sweeteners in the discovery of deviations and rationalize performance, legislation governing local government laws

Islamic political thought

This course deals with the analysis of major concepts in Islamic political thought - the positions of the doctrines and basic schools in it: the Sunnah - the Shiites - Khawarij and others - Senior  philosophers in the past and present such as: Farabi , Ibn Rushd, Ibn Sina , Ghazali , Ibn Taymiyya , from issues of power and freedom, and their perception of the state in general, and particularly the Islamic state , and a link to their interpretation of these issues, the problems faced by their communities , as this course analyzes the answers provided by the Muslim intellectuals of the challenges facing the Muslim communities at the present time

The Arab world in international politics

This course deals with the study of the Arab world in international politics and policies of a number of major powers towards the nation like the United States and Western Europe .

Characteristics of a Political Science Graduate

The graduate will have achieved an understanding of the fundamental knowledge provided by the program related to: 

1-      How to use the various academic methods to assist in analyzing and describing political phenomena and issues.

2-      How to obtain political knowledge from different available sources

3-      How to make use of consolidating both political knowledge and political events to understand current events. 

4-      Understanding the nature and importance of political participation.

5-      How to understand national and international issues as well as the nature of the modern public relations.
