Report on the Awareness Seminar about the Dangers of Smoking and E-cigarettes

Date: Thursday, February 13, 2025
Location: Faculty of Economics and Political Science, October 6 University
The Faculty of Economics and Political Science at October 6 University, in collaboration with the Faculty of Pharmacy, organized an awareness seminar about the dangers of smoking and e-cigarettes as part of ongoing efforts to raise health awareness among students and the university community.
Professor Dr. Samir Osman began the seminar by highlighting the health risks associated with traditional smoking, explaining that cigarettes contain nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide, which are substances that cause serious diseases such as lung cancer, heart diseases, and respiratory infections. He also emphasized that smoking not only harms the smoker but also affects those around them through passive smoking, which increases the incidence of respiratory diseases among non-smokers. Additionally, Dr. Osman conducted a practical demonstration in front of the students to show the negative effects of smoking in a hands-on manner.
Next, Dr. Saadallah Nadi spoke about e-cigarettes, noting that they are not a safe alternative as they are often portrayed. E-cigarettes contain chemicals that can lead to lung damage, addiction, and serious complications on the cardiovascular system. He also pointed out that e-cigarettes contain glycerin, which causes numerous health issues, most notably infertility.
Recommendations:
  • Quit smoking in all its forms to avoid its health risks.
  • Raise awareness about the dangers of smoking among youth, especially in universities.
  • Provide support programs to help quit smoking within educational institutions.
  • Strengthen laws that limit the spread of tobacco products and e-cigarettes.
At the end of the seminar, the floor was opened for discussion, where students showed great interest in the information presented and asked questions about ways to quit smoking and available healthy alternatives. The speakers emphasized the importance of making an early decision to quit smoking to preserve personal and community health.
