Awareness Lecture on Addiction and Drug Abuse at the Faculty of Pharmacy – October 6 University
As part of its community engagement mission and commitment to raising awareness about critical health issues, the Community Service Committee of the Faculty of Pharmacy – October 6 University organized an awareness lecture titled:
“Awareness on Addiction and Drug Abuse”
The event took place on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at 1:00 PM in Lecture Hall 2109 at the Faculty of Pharmacy.
The lecture was delivered by Dr. Mohamed Ramadan, a representative of the Fund for Combating and Treating Addiction and Substance Abuse. Dr. Ramadan provided a comprehensive overview of addiction and drug abuse, emphasizing the devastating effects on individuals, communities, and the nation at large.
1. Definition of Addiction and Drugs:

Addiction: Defined as a chronic medical condition characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences.

Drugs: Described as chemical substances that affect brain and nervous system functions, leading to changes in mood, perception, and behavior.

Psychological Effects: Addiction leads to a range of mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, and psychosis. It also impairs focus, decision-making abilities, and deteriorates social relationships.

Physical Effects: Dr. Ramadan discussed the severe physical harm caused by addiction, such as damage to vital organs, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and increased risk of infectious diseases.
3. Negative Impact on the Nation:

Economic Impact: Addiction places a significant economic burden on the state, including increased healthcare costs, law enforcement expenses, and loss of productivity.

Rise in Crime and Accidents: Addiction is associated with higher rates of crime and traffic accidents, which negatively affect public safety and societal stability.
4. The Role of the Fund for Combating Addiction:

Preventive Role: Dr. Ramadan highlighted the vital role of the Fund’s awareness campaigns and educational programs targeting various segments of society, aimed at increasing awareness and correcting misconceptions about addiction.

Therapeutic Role: The Fund also provides free and confidential treatment and rehabilitation services for individuals struggling with addiction. Treatment includes multiple stages—from medical and psychological evaluation to medication-assisted therapy, behavioral treatment, and social rehabilitation.

Dr. Ramadan stressed the importance of early intervention, affirming that recovery is possible with the right support and personal determination.
He explained that treatment extends beyond managing symptoms and involves reintegrating recovering individuals into a healthy and productive lifestyle.
