Department of English Language
The Mission of the English Language Program:
Qualifying cadres who are fluent in English and Arabic and have linguistic, academic, critical, research and cultural skills that allow them to work in various fields to strengthen community service, labour market and communication amongst different cultures.
The Objectives of the English Language Program:
The Faculty of Language and Translation adopts the National Academic Reference Standards (NARS) for the language sector, which were developed to ensure the achievement of academic performance leading to outputs that meet the specifications required by the local and national labour market alongside with maintaining competitiveness in the Arab world. These national academic standards were approved by the Council of the Faculty of Languages and Translation on 17/6/2013.
Objectives:) General and Special Qualifications of the Graduate of the English Department Programme)
The English Language Programme intends to qualify a graduate who is able to
1- Master the English language by developing his or oral and written language skills and abilities, enabling him/her to meet the requirements of the labour market.
2- Concentrate on theoretical and practical translation skills as a major focus in the study programmes by using language laboratories. This enables the graduate to master the art of specialized translation from Arabic to English in field of specialization and vice versa.
3- Master the Arabic language in terms of grammar, texts, literature, and Arabic culture to overcome the difficulties of specialized translation.
4- Focus on the research and analytical aspect of preparing a conscious mind capable of thinking critically and scientifically, by using state-of-the-art technologies according to the academically recognized rules.
5- Learn a second foreign language of his or her choice as an additional support for his/her cultural and linguistic abilities to interact positively with other cultures.
6- Read selected books and literary texts that represent different eras in the culture of the language of specialization, allowing him/her to get to know the most important developments of the different literary arts and genres.
7- Understand the distinctive characteristics of literary texts (poetic, theatrical, narrative) and their relationship to various literary trends.
8- Consider others’ opinions, communicate, and interact positively with other cultures while preserving cultural and national identity, and knowing their rights and duties.
9- Analyze literary texts according to the theories of criticism across different eras of the culture of the language of specialization.
10- Analyze the structure, level, and function of speech in the language of specialization.
11- Interact positively with the language of specialization and get familiarized with its intellectual and artistic output and development, so as to realize the comprehensive civilization framework and its cultural features.
12- Learn about the principles and branches of linguistics, including syntax, etymology, morphology, and semantics, and phonetics.
13- Use computer skills and modern information and communication technologies to study, analyze, and search for information.
14- Develop the skills of scientific thinking, critical analysis, deduction, creativity, and the technical side.
