Under the gracious patronage of Prof. Dr. Mamdouh Ghorab, President of the University, Prof. Dr. Hisham Tamraz, Vice President for Community Service Affairs, and Prof. Dr. Omaima Ghanem, Dean of the Faculty, the Spanish Department celebrated Colombian Cultural Day on Thursday, April 23, on the occasion of honoring Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel García Márquez, the pioneer of magical realism in Latin American literature.
Under the gracious patronage of Prof. Dr. Mamdouh Ghorab, President of the University, Prof. Dr. Hisham Tamraz, Vice President for Community Service Affairs, and Prof. Dr. Omaima Ghanem, Dean of the Faculty, the Spanish Department celebrated Colombian Cultural Day on Thursday, April 23, on the occasion of honoring Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel García Márquez, the pioneer of magical realism in Latin American literature.
The celebration was organized under the supervision of Dr. Sherine Samir, Acting Head of the Department, who presented the Ambassador a copy of the translation of selected short stories from Colombian literature, produced by third- and fourth-year students.
The department’s students also prepared subtitles for a documentary film about the Republic of Colombia.
The ceremony began with Prof. Dr. Hisham Tamraz presenting the University Shield to Her Excellency Ambassador Luz Elena Martínez Kasab, followed by the screening of the translated documentary film. Afterwards, Dr. Sayed Wasel presented the translated book to the Ambassador, accompanied by the student Rahma Garhy on behalf of the participating students.
Her Excellency the Ambassador praised the tremendous effort made in organizing the celebration, the documentary film—which she requested a copy of for use in future meetings—and the translated book.
She also presented certificates of appreciation to the participating students and commended the warm reception extended by the Dean and the leadership of our beloved university.
She further expressed her desire to sign a memorandum of understanding for the exchange of expertise and scholarships with universities in Colombia.
